Introducing a New Way to Find your Life Purpose
How To find purpose like Oprah, Einstein, and Steve Jobs.
Courtney Bigony is on a mission to unlock human potential at scale and invented a new method for creating human potential technology called Positive Product Design™ to do just that. She holds a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology.
Q: You’re building an app that helps people find their life purpose and just launched the first feature. Congrats! Where can people go to check it out?
Thanks, Scott. People can check it out here or go to thisiswhatyoushouldbedoingwithyourlife.com to find their life purpose in a couple of clicks!
Q: Why did you focus on helping people find purpose?
Science shows that people who thrive most have a clear life purpose so we built a feature inspired by the careers of the world’s greatest icons (think: Oprah, Einstein, Steve Jobs) who all found their unique purpose in life. It’s a quick and simple way to get clear on what you truly want.
Q: A little bird told me that your app is inspired by my book Transcend. :) Can you share more about the science that inspired the feature?
Yes! The app is inspired by your science as well as the queen of purpose herself, Oprah, who says the most successful people all have one thing in common: clarity on what they truly want.
Science also shows that the most self-actualized people all follow a similar formula for finding purpose. They start by identifying their top domains (or fields of interest and expertise) as well as their top strengths, values, passions, and intelligences. They then leverage their unique combination of gifts to serve the rest of humanity.
This positive-sum game is known as “synergy,” where what’s good for you is also good for the world. So, when people find their purpose, they become the builders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who solve problems that impact both society and the planet.
The problem is that many people are working in jobs and industries that don't inspire them. The feature we just launched addresses this issue by helping people identify their top domains and areas of interests. Gaining this clarity and focus is the critical first step that most icons and change-makers naturally take.
For example, Oprah's top domain is human potential (personal growth and elevating human consciousness), Einstein's top domains are science and space, and Steve Jobs worked at the intersection of technology and the arts. At a young age, Elon Musk was clear that he wanted to transform space, the environment, and technology.
Q: What’s your unique purpose in life?
I’m on a mission to unlock human potential at scale.
I’ve always been interested in how to have the most leveraged form of positive impact, and I believe the way to do this is by combining technology with the latest science of thriving. Essentially, taking the best of the best in science and helping it spread as far as possible through technology. There are 8.1 billion people on the planet, and I want to transform the lives of every person with access to a smartphone. This is why I’m building the world’s first human potential technology.
I also want to inspire Silicon Valley to join the modern human potential movement that originated in the 60’s at Esalen. This is why I created Positive Product Design, a method tech creators can use to build technology that unlocks human potential at scale.
Q: What makes your app different from other apps and offerings that aim to help people thrive?
Historian Yuval Noah Harari says that we are experiencing information overload. People are inundated with so much information that our minds struggle to process it all. So, true personal empowerment isn’t just about access to information; it’s about taking action on the information that matters. Through the app, people won't need to spend time sifting through information. We’re building actionable science directly into the app so that people can easily take the steps they need to thrive.
Q: Thanks, Courtney!
Hmm, isn't this a bit simplistic of an approach for something as profound and complex as one's purpose?
Super cool development. The app nailed it for me, in a general way at least. I’m excited to see Positive Psychology being applied to human flourishing at scale through technology! Lots more to come, I’m sure.
