Welcome to October’s Research Roundup! These are the ten studies I came across this month that made me go Whoa.
1. The brain “signature” of intelligence turns out to be heavily tangled up with socioeconomic status.
Using brain scans from thousands of 9- and 10-year-olds in the ABCD study, researchers mapped 649 different variables against the brain and asked which ones showed the strongest, most reliable associations. The winner was socioeconomic status, and its pattern sat mostly in motor and sensory regions, not the areas we usually think of as “cognitive.” IQ shared that same pattern. When the researchers adjusted for socioeconomic status, the brain–IQ links weakened, and models trained only on affluent kids did a poor job of predicting IQ in everyone else. I’ve been arguing since Ungifted that what we read as raw “smartness” is deeply entangled with opportunity, and here it is at the level of the brain scan. This should give pause to anyone hoping to identify gifted kids from their neural wiring alone. (Caveat: cross-sectional and population-level, it says nothing about any individual child, and the paper came out in June, so it’s recent rather than brand new.)

2. In kids with ADHD, a high IQ helps with focus and may make impulsivity a little worse.
In a clinical sample of 5,138 children with ADHD aged 6 to 16, higher overall IQ went along with fewer symptoms. Break IQ into its parts, though, and the picture splits. Higher verbal IQ went with less inattention but more impulsivity, and among kids 12 and older, nonverbal ability had a U-shaped relationship with impulsivity. A subgroup analysis turned up a cluster of the highest-IQ, least-impaired children who still showed notable impulsivity. This is twice-exceptionality in the data: high ability doesn’t protect a child evenly across the board, and it can reshape how ADHD shows up, which is one reason these kids so often get missed. I care about this one a lot. (Caveat: the effects are very small, few survived correction for multiple comparisons, and it’s an observational sample from clinics in China.)
3. The biggest genetic study of personality ever run found over a thousand variants, and a very humble bottom line.
Researchers pooled 46 cohorts, between about 611,000 and 1.14 million people depending on the trait, and searched the genome for links to the Big Five. They found 1,260 genetic variants, 824 of them new. Within-family comparisons suggest these associations mostly aren’t an artifact of the homes people grew up in, and the genetic picture looked strikingly similar across countries and age groups. And yet, all the common variants combined explain only about 5 to 9 percent of the differences in any one trait. I’ve spent a good chunk of my career studying openness to experience, and I find both halves of this satisfying: personality really does have roots in our biology, and those roots leave enormous room for everything else. (Caveat: the genetic scores’ links to life outcomes were small, and the authors say plainly that they cannot predict any individual’s behavior.)

4. Women are more emotionally intelligent on the tests. Men are more emotionally intelligent in their own estimation.
This meta-analysis gathered 1,279 papers covering 609,278 people in 76 countries over nearly 30 years. Women came out ahead at recognizing emotions, understanding them, and helping other people manage theirs. Men scored slightly higher at managing their own. The twist is in how you measure it: on performance-based tests, women’s advantage was substantial, and on self-report questionnaires it almost disappeared. Co-author Jochen Menges put it better than I could: “Women are emotionally intelligent. Men think they are.” The encouraging part is that the gaps have been shrinking in recent studies, especially among children, which suggests these are skills people learn rather than fixed endowments. (Caveat: the analysis can’t tell us why the differences exist, and it can’t separate generational change from age effects.)
5. You can reason your way through a logic puzzle without the language parts of your brain.
Evelina Fedorenko’s group scanned 29 adults while they solved formal logic problems, and the brain’s language network stayed almost entirely out of it. Reasoning drew on separate systems, with different ones handling inductive and deductive problems. Then came the part I love: two people with severe aphasia, who had lost much of their ability to use language, solved 76 and 98 percent of the inductive reasoning problems. Whatever the “language of thought” is, it apparently isn’t English. This is one more piece of evidence for the multi-dimensional mind I wrote about in Ungifted: a person’s facility with words and their capacity to think are related, and they are also separable. (Caveat: only two aphasia patients, adults only, and a narrow set of reasoning tasks.)
6. Couples who feel awe together report happier relationships, and it has to be together.
Across two studies of 198 and 306 adults in relationships, how often partners experienced awe with each other (standing under a night sky, at a concert, at the edge of a canyon) predicted relationship satisfaction, passionate love, and a sense of overlap between self and partner. In the second study, shared awe accounted for about half of the variation in how much the relationship was flourishing, and it held up after the researchers accounted for shared amusement and how often couples simply went out and did things. Here’s the curious bit: once shared awe was in the model, a person’s own general tendency to feel awe was linked to lower satisfaction. Awe seems to bind two people when they’re in it at the same time. (Caveat: cross-sectional, only one partner reported, and happy couples may simply seek out more wondrous things to do together.)
7. Tell people their work will be kept, and they choose the harder task. Tell them it’ll be thrown away, and most don’t.
In four experiments with 604 children aged 4 to 9 and 582 adults, participants chose between an easy activity and a more effortful creative one. When they were told their creation would be saved, 83 percent of adults and over 80 percent of the children chose the effortful option. When told it would be dismantled afterward, only about a third of adults and half of the children did. Nothing else changed. The significance on offer here was about as minimal as it gets (nobody promised the work would matter to anyone), and it still moved people, from preschool on. Emphasizing how fun the task was made up some of the difference, but not all of it. We want our effort to leave a trace. (Caveat: short lab tasks with physical materials, and the cultural generality hasn’t been tested.)
8. Psychedelics and anesthesia push the brain in opposite directions.
A University of Michigan team compared resting brain scans from eight datasets, 178 people in total, under LSD, psilocybin, ketamine and nitrous oxide on one side, and sleep and the anesthetic propofol on the other. The psychedelic states made the brain’s networks more connected and integrated, with more complex interaction between them. Sleep and propofol produced the mirror image: networks pulled apart into more isolated islands. A single statistical dimension captured about 70 percent of the variation and cleanly sorted the two families of states. For anyone interested in what consciousness actually requires (and I am, more so every day), it’s a lovely symmetry. (Caveat: some groups were tiny, with only seven people on psilocybin; the data came from different scanners; and the authors themselves note that more connectivity doesn’t automatically mean more consciousness.)
9. For a teenager with an extraordinary memory, the past keeps walking into the present.
This is a detailed case study of a 16-year-old with highly superior autobiographical memory, the rare ability to recall what happened on nearly any given day of your life. Given random dates, he recalled 83 percent correctly, against about 29 percent for a comparison group. The most striking result came in a lab task that sampled his thoughts while his mind wandered: 87 percent of his spontaneous off-task thoughts were involuntary personal memories, compared with 39 percent in 36 comparison participants. He didn’t mind-wander more than anyone else. When his mind wandered, it went backward. A vivid reminder that daydreaming isn’t one thing; what fills the wandering mind varies enormously from person to person. (Caveat: a single case, tested remotely, with thought content that relies on his own reports.)
10. Loneliness and isolation cost years of healthy life, and a healthy lifestyle only offsets one of them.
Following 277,489 UK adults for more than 13 years, researchers estimated how long people could expect to live free of major physical disease and mental disorder. At age 50, being both lonely and socially isolated went with about 3.7 fewer years free of mental disorder for women and 5.8 fewer for men. A healthy lifestyle narrowed the gap tied to social isolation in women. For loneliness, they made no significant difference. You can eat your Broccoli and still be lonely, and the loneliness appears to take its toll regardless. Being around people and feeling connected to them turn out to be separate needs, which is why I keep insisting that connection belongs near the base of any honest account of what humans need. (Caveat: observational, loneliness measured once at the start, and only about 5 percent of the people UK Biobank invited took part, so the sample isn’t fully representative.)
That’s the ten for this month, from the genetics of a million personalities to a teenager who can’t stop remembering.

Good batch this month, Scott! The one that jumped out to me the most was the one about solving logic puzzles without language. As an evolutionary philosopher, this makes total sense since we see non-human animals rationally solving difficulties all the time. Those aren’t verbal logic puzzles, but it makes sense there’s a continuum of faculties built deep into our minds for problem solving.
What stands out to me is how easily we can interpret something as an inherent trait when environment and opportunity may have played a much larger role than we realize. That distinction has implications far beyond intelligence.
