Hello, Dr. Kaufman, Nineteen years ago, I lost my life and my brain. My former life as a freelance ghost(writer) and my former brain.
Please take a look at my stack, which is called Dispatch from Bewilderness. Each piece takes less than two minutes to read — plus subscriptions are free.
Interesting podcast, Ben Rein. But this is NOT the "latest science." There are other fields of psychology that are way ahead of you on this topic. Way, way ahead. Like 30 years! For starters, Developmental Psychology has had to understand brain development firstly because of the Romanian orphans. They changed everything & you guys need to catch up. Remember the fall of Communism in 1990's? It revealed vast orphanages where the children were fed and cleaned but had limited human interaction/'brain friends? We (sum total of human knowledge) were upended by discovering how that babies' brains literally do not grow without interactions, or friends!
Ben, you are about to have a baby. That baby will to be an active partner in creating inter-brain synchrony from 2 weeks old. They act as though they know that their lives depend upon it. Mark my words! Watch & listen.
There's a vast body of knowledge under the heading of "Attachment" in developmental psychology that makes your material look thread bare. Check out D Bruce Perry's work. I think he's the best. He's been working on this for about 40+ years & developed brilliant, practical stuff. He has a great resource available in his library https://www.childtrauma.org/cta-library.
The trouble with academic psychology, Scott & Ben, is that you don't look outside your own little silos often enough. In the real world, we don't have that luxury, thankfully.
Great podcast. The latest World Happiness Report covered a lot of these topics as well. Strong social bonds, even through simple daily things like sharing meals can have a great impact on wellbeing. The sad fact is that younger generations are report less and less genuine connection.
