Why Social Health is the Missing Key to Living Longer, Healthier, and Happier w/ Kasley Killam
I had a great chat with author and social health expert Kasley Killam about the importance of prioritizing social health.
I recently had a great chat with Kasley Killam, a leading expert on social health. Drawing from over a decade of studying, sharing, and applying the science of human connection, she elevates the idea of social health as a writer and speaker and helps individuals, communities, and organizations become more socially healthy. Kasley leads the nonprofit Social Health Labs, whose programs have connected and inspired thousands of people across the US and globe since launching in 2020.
In this episode we discuss Kasley’s latest book “The Art and Science of Connection: Why Social Health is the Missing Key to Living Longer, Healthier, and Happier”. Kasley argues that physical and mental health are incomplete without social health, and makes a persuasive case for why social health should be prioritized a lot more in our society than it currently is. We discuss why cultivating meaningful relationships is as vital as exercise, nutrition, and sleep, and the ways for us all ot be more socially healthy.
You can listen to the audio-only version wherever you get your podcasts (Apple, Spotify, iHeartRadio). If you enjoy listening to my podcast, please consider writing a positive 5-star review on Apple. It would mean a lot to me!
The split between mental health and social health may largely be a false one. By this I mean that it's hardly possible for someone with a compromised mental health to be socially fulfilled. And social ineptness is one of the many contributors to poor mental health. The relationship is solidly bidirectional. I'd rather think that when it comes to mental health, the main social factor resides in the deficit observed in one's social need versus one's social capital. And more often than not, that deficit is a function of some deficit in personality or other mental health factors.
